Gospel Singer Who Didn’t Know Gay Celebrities Were a Thing is Up Shit Creek With a Brittle Crucifix for a Paddle

 

Earlier in the week, American gospel singer and devout christian Kim Burrell delivered a “sermon” in which she had this to say about the gay community: “That perverted homosexual spirit, and the spirit of delusion and confusion, it has deceived many men and women, and it’s caused us pain on the body of Christ.” She then yelled, “You are perverted!” several times to no one in particular, unless there were several gay people in attendance whose brunch plans fell through. Later, when confronted over the severity and downright fucking intolerance of her comments, she reiterated that she had nothing to apologise for, and that homosexuality is “against the nature of God.” She also did this weird thing where she pointed out that she never used the term “L-G-B-T” but only “S-I-N”, spelling each out like a kindergartener who just shit in the corner but wants to prove that doesn’t make them that stupid, right?

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Damn, a devout Christian hates gays? For real?! How do Jews feel about bacon?” Yes, alright, it’s a fairly predictable position for people strictly adherent to their religious faith to take. The significance, however, is in the company that Burrell has previously kept and later intended to keep going into the week. For instance: last year Frank Ocean, who has gone on record as having once been in a homosexual relationship, released the tremendous album Blonde. There’s a heavenly track near the backend called “Godspeed” which features the vocals of a renowned gospel singer. I’ll give you a shiny penny if you can guess that singer’s name. Noting the hypocrisy and general fuckery of Burrell’s behaviour, Frank Ocean’s mother took to twitter to denounce the woman’s hateful stance and ask if her son could edit Burrell out of the song. We’re still waiting to hear back but, if Frank does choose to make some adjustments, let’s hope this doesn’t become a Life of Pablo kind of situation.

Even more inexplicable, Burrell was slated to appear as a musical guest on a talk show this Thursday hosted by perhaps the most famous lesbian in the world. Now, I’m almost out of shiny pennies but, seriously, have another guess. Well, yeah, you’re goddamn right: Burrell went on a homophobic rant just a few days before she was going to perform on the Ellen DeGeneres Show… hosted by Ellen fucking DeGeneres! What in Christ kind of an approach is that? That’s like punching Donald Trump in the face two days before you go to a KKK-hosted tupperware evening: you could not be sending a more unwelcoming message to the crowd you’ll be sitting down with. Needless to say, Burrell’s appearance has been cancelled, presumably after DeGeneres spent a few hours soul-searching and consoling herself upon realising that there’s a person on the planet who might not actually know who the fuck she is.

So, weird way to start the year: gospel singer’s gay-bashing and Donald Trump acting suspiciously sensible about something. Bad omens or not, the good news is at least David Bowie can’t die twice.
